restroom.stall

Yes, it started in a bathroom stall. The spirit world works in the most hilarious of ways for me. You see I was working out in the gym this morning. I work out at LA Fitness Sugar Land. I worked at this gym in 2007-2008 back when it first opened. My book was set to publish on this very day. It was 11-11-22.

I was listening to the audiobook of Stories that Stick by Kindra Hall. She was talking about the origin story of your business. And guess what? I was in the restroom at LA Fitness when I was listening to this part of the book.

magical

What happened next was magical. And honestly, it was funny too. I was in the exact stall that I talk about in the book The Truth Bubbles Up, my book.

Here are a couple of excerpts from my book to explain what happened in that stall and its significance in my life. Ironically! 🀣🀣🀣

Excerpt from the book:

By 2007 I had simply gotten used to the bullying. I did the best I could when I had my boys and when they weren’t with me I learned to let go and trust the process. By now I had spent 4 years in therapy. More on that when you meet Shary in the therapist chapter.

In 2007 I was working at LA Fitness. Kyle was playing baseball and transferring his baseball equipment was difficult as I was not allowed in or near Kenny’s house. So one time I dropped off Kyle’s stuff at Kenny’s shop in Rosenberg.

I had this feeling while in the shop that the guys were checking me out in a flirty way. This must have threatened the stepmom because the email I got from her was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

The actual stall! 🀣

I was at LA Fitness ready to meet my 10:00 client. I went to the restroom when my blackberry went off, yeah, that’s how long ago this was! The notification was an email from her. I don’t remember what the email said, it was nothing new, but it upset me to no end.

In fact, I had what my therapist called dissociation. I left the gym in tears and somehow made it to my car and started driving. I had no idea where I was even though I traveled those roads for years. When trauma and chronic stress become overwhelming, our nervous system tends to move into a shutdown state. That is exactly what happened to me. This would happen to me several times over the next few years as you will come to see.

origin.story

So how is this the origin story of Stop the Mind Screw?

I let go. I know that sounds so simple and it really is. Here is another excerpt from the book in the chapter on therapists that explains that process:

Another excerpt from the book:

My favorite, most life-changing book for me to this day, was by Eckhart Tolle A New Earth. The book was released in 2005. Oprah Winfrey had this book in her book club and I took her online course on the book. To this day, Eckhart stands as my favorite author and teacher of all time.

What I learned from that book is something that altered the course of my life forever. It was 2007. I was working at LA Fitness. I was the first female trainer in that gym and I worked with some of the best trainers I have ever met. We have all moved on from there and most of us have our own gyms. Today I workout at that gym.

So the memory I have from one day there stuck out in my mind forever and I still see it today. I was getting ready to meet my client at 10:00, I went to the ladies’ room, and my blackberry went off. I was in the 2nd stall from the front. This alert was an email from the stepmom. Yes, I spoke about this earlier in the book but it is important to note again here because a transition happened that day.

The email was nothing different from any other email she had sent in the past six years. But this one stung for some reason. I left the restroom crying. I tried to tell the guys what had happened and to tell my client I would not be there but I couldn’t get the words out. I got in my car and started driving.

A few minutes into the drive I had to pull over. I did not know where I was. I was having a nervous breakdown. I was hyperventilating and everything. It was super scary. I thought I was going to die. Somehow I gathered my composure and called my friend Lydia. She would know what to do. She always knew what to do. When she asked where I was I told her I was near where we dropped off her computer one day. She called her boyfriend Frank who was working in the area and he came and got me.

It was a beautiful February day. Frank took me to a park to distract me and calm me down and we took a walk. It was along the Brazos river, near where Kyle had that practice that day and that dinner at Ruthie's. As I walked I calmed down. I slowly but surely came to realize something that day. Something that would give me my power back. I let go!

Letting go may sound really simple to you. And I get that. But what I learned from Eckhart Tolle is that letting go is something very important for all of us. I had been holding onto what was what I thought had been an expectation for my life. I expected my boys to be with me, I was their mom. I expected Kenny to share custody as I would have done for him had I been given the power that he stole from me. I also expected my boys to be raised and to be taught to respect their own mother. And treat others with kindness and be humble.

But all of those expectations boiled down to one sentence, β€œAnd you expected something different from that man?!”

Expectations are a funny thing. I once heard a Chinese Proverb that said, β€œHappy is the man who expects nothing for he is never disappointed.” And I did go that extreme at one point. It felt good there. I was never disappointed, I thought. But I also was not living.

They say the journey and the destination are one. You need expectations to walk that journey to your destination. Don’t worry we’ll discuss this topic soon, just stick around until the very end.

Hilarious

This was so funny. Why? Because my origin story started in a bathroom stall. One that I frequent on a regular basis. And then to hear Kindra Hall talk about the origin story of your business while I was learning this was the spot? My guardian angels really have a huge sense of humor.

entreprenuer

Dear Entrepreneur,

Your story matters. Storytelling is one of the most powerful skills you can learn in life. I wrote my book after studying storytelling for over 2 years. Here are my favorite books on storytelling:

I am also asked how I wrote my book and how long it took me.

It only took a matter of weeks to write my book. I used Notion.io and just began listing stories I wanted to share in the story. Then I made a page for each chapter and inserted those stories in each chapter.. Before I knew it my book was complete.

The hardest part? Uploading my manuscript into draft2digital and linking the book in Gumroad and loading it into bookfunnel.com. Those 3 things right there really tried my brain but in a matter of days, I had it complete.
