Can't Hurt Me - The Ultimate Mindset Shift Book

The first time I heard about David Goggins was when my youngest son Kody told me to listen to the Joe Rogan Show. Link to the exact episode here. This was in  early 2019

Kody rarely listens to podcasts so this was a sign that I needed to listen to this one. And he was right I loved it!!

Since that time I played one of his YouTube Videos at an OCuSOFT team meeting and discuss him from time to time in inspirational conversations.

But I just realized I have never read his book. What? 😨

Yes, it wasn't until my interview with Natalie Kime of Wealth Wave (coming out Thursday, January 13, 2022 Link to it here: www.kathieowen.com/16) that I even thought to look at the book, even though that podcast episode was a promotional episode for the book.

Natalie mentioned in the interview that the book was in her top 3 and she recommended listening to it on Audible as there are mindset challenges at the end of each chapter.

So I ran down to Audible, got more credits, as I used up my credit for the month, and gobbled up the book. At the time of this writing, I am on Chapter 4, Taking Souls.

This morning I woke up at 5:15 without the alarm. I didn't want to get out of bed. But I did. I listened to Chapter 3 while working out and I will tell you that if I didn't work out this morning I would have missed out on so much!

I learned that motivation is a funny thing - like I always say and teach. I even have to tell my ego to shut up when it tries to get me to go back to sleep.

Sleep is something I truly love. There are 2 things you don't mess with when it comes to me and that is #1. My sleep and #2. My sleep.

But I do have a routine I stick to. Yes, you can set a clock to my routine. My oldest son Kyle calls me "Routine." But a lot of that comes from my years as a survivor of Complex PTSD and the fact that I crave routine. (that's another story for another blog post)

Routine is not always about comfort though. It is something that I must stick to so I can achieve my goals. Like David talks about in the accountability mirror.

Want help with your morning routine?

Comfort would be going back to bed. Going back to bed is the path of least resistance. But hitting the gym when I don't want to - is the path of most resistance. And I do it!! And I teach others to do the same.

It is 100% mindset! Mindset is everything. Stop mind screwing yourself out of your power!

This book is the antithesis of toxic positivity and you know I really dislike that word. That word fights for victim mentality and will keep you stuck.

Positivity is not toxic. What is toxic is your mind and you must cleanse it and callous it up - as David says throughout this book.

Also, David Goggins is interviewed by the guy who reads the book, Adam Skolnick and they go into such depth.

David Goggins for those of you who do not know is a Retired Navy Seal, that alone should tell you something. But David is far deeper than that. He is a former USAF Tactical Air Control Party member who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is an ultramarathon runner, ultra-distance cyclist, triathlete, and world record holder for the most pull-ups done in 24 hours.

He came from a really rough childhood but does not wear a crown of thorns, instead, he transmuted that pain and tragedy into triumph and victory. He overcame using mindset alone. And in this book, he teaches us how to do that, especially the Audible version.

He repeatedly says "I am not the hero, you are." And that is the ultimate story of a lifetime. You are the hero of your journey.

In this book you will laugh, you will cry, you will see yourself in his stories (I know I sure do).

And if you "think" you are looking for motivation you will find it here! I say "think" because truly motivation is deeper than just saying I need to get motivated to exercise or go to work with a good attitude, save more money, or just live your best life now. He even talks about overcoming imposter syndrome for my fellow entrepreneurs.

This book ranks up there in my top 3 as well. It might just beat out my #1 book which is A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. And let me tell you I am a voracious reader.

Run, don't walk, get the book on Audible. It is a must-listen. Oh, there are cuss words in the book there is a clean version as well. You can get that on the clean version link.
