Elevator Ride to the 60th Floor

I used to work on the 66th floor of the second-tallest skyscraper in downtown Houston. To get to the 66th floor you needed to ride an express elevator to the 60th floor and then catch a second elevator for the last 6 floors.

But some days this express elevator was not so “express.” It was odd. I began to notice that some days the elevator would take longer to get to the top. It was almost like we were stuck. No, not almost, it was like we were stuck!

But I quickly found out that on windy days the elevator needed to be slowed or it would bang against the walls inside the elevator shaft! Those tall skyscrapers in Houston are actually on giant wheels underground and they sway in the wind. Kind of a scary thought but it is put there for our safety so I trusted it!

A watched pot never boils

What does this have to do with slowing down time Kathie? I am so glad you asked. My therapist Shary once asked me, “Have you ever watched a pot boil and wondered why it takes so long?” “Why yes, I have!” She was referencing slowing down time. When you focus on the tiny moments you can actually slow time down.

Focus on the details, the tiny moments, and watch time slow way down! How does one do that? Enter Homework for Life.

Homework for Life

What is homework for life? It is a method introduced by storytelling teacher Matthew Dicks. He teaches us how to do it in detail in his book Storyworthy. Matthew says,

“As you begin to take stock of your days, find those [story] moments — see them and record them — time will begin to slow down for you. The pace of your life will relax.”

How to do homework for life.

It is really simple. Each day, you must write the date and a couple of words or sentence summary of a 5-second story moment for the day. You do not need to write the whole story. It does not have to be a huge moment, just something that you might write a story about that day.

It’s a challenge at first to train your mind to see the frame of the story, but then it gets easier. If you like, you can start to record any past moments that get triggered in memory. Most importantly, you must write at least one entry every day to make it a habit.

I do this in my Notion app. I have a monthly page and each month I have a page for stories and one for dreams. I do this exact same method to record my dreams and to record my stories.

I have found two things:

  1. I have slowed down time! I record those moments of time that I may have otherwise forgotten. They live in my memory forever!

  2. I have access to those tiny moments at any given time. Not only do those moments live in my memory forever but I always have access to those pages with those stories. I can easily go back to September 2022 and read about that month. Those brief sentences take me back in time. And all is good!

Extra Special Memories

Do you ever have extra special days? I sure do.

In fact, the Houston Astros World Series Victory Parade was one of those days. So in early November, I have an extra page in my Notion file where I documented every single moment of that parade so I will never forget.

And I have a reminder to take me back to that day any time I want!

Slow down time

So why not slow time down by logging your daily stories? It will be one of the best things you can do for your own life no matter who you are or what you do.

Before you know it you will be slowing time down just like the elevator on windy days! And if you are stuck in that elevator you can go back and read your stories and re-live special, little moments that you probably would have lost forever!
