The Growth Mindset

Central to overcoming setbacks is the adoption of a growth mindset—a belief in the fluidity of our capabilities and the power of effort over inherent talent. Embracing a growth mindset allows us to view challenges as opportunities to expand our skills and knowledge. It encourages us to persist through difficulties, understanding that every effort brings us closer to mastery.

Strategies for Learning from Setbacks

  1. Emotional Management: The initial step in dealing with setbacks is managing our emotional response. Recognizing and addressing our feelings helps prevent rash decisions and ensures we approach the situation with clarity and purpose.

  2. Seeking and Accepting Support: No individual is an island, especially in the corporate world. Building a network of peers, mentors, and advisors can provide the external perspective and encouragement needed to overcome challenges

  3. Flexibility and Adaptability: The ability to pivot and adapt to new circumstances is invaluable. When faced with setbacks, being open to changing course and trying new strategies can lead to unexpected and rewarding pathways

  4. Perseverance and Persistence: The journey to success is rarely a straight line. Maintaining the drive to keep pushing forward, despite setbacks, is crucial. It's about focusing on the process, not just the outcome, and finding fulfillment in the effort itself.

  5. Learning and Growth: Every setback carries with it a lesson. Taking the time to reflect on what went wrong, why it happened, and how it can be avoided in the future is fundamental to personal and professional development.

Stories of Resilience

Storytelling is so beneficial in corporate wellness. I talk about it all the time. You can read this article on that now.

I have a story of CEO of OCuSOFT and an industry recall that cost her company $14million!! And how she remained resilient despite what looked like defeat.

Even the pandemic is loaded with stories of resilient behaviors.

Asking the question WHAT? Instead of asking WHY things are happening to me can help build resilience.

These stories remind us that setbacks are not unique to us but are a universal part of the human experience. They highlight the potential for growth and innovation that can arise from adversity.

Maintaining Motivation

Staying motivated in the face of setbacks requires a clear vision of our "why"—the driving force behind our goals. Revisiting our core motivations can reignite our passion and commitment, providing the energy to persevere through challenges. It's about holding onto the bigger picture, the ultimate vision that guides our efforts and sacrifices. Here is a bonus article on maintaining motivation during a setback.

Practical Steps for Overcoming Setbacks

  1. Take a Break: Sometimes, stepping back is the most productive action. It allows for mental and emotional recovery, enabling us to return to our challenges with renewed vigor and perspective.

  2. Reassess and Plan: Use the insight gained from setbacks to reassess goals and strategies. Break down overarching objectives into manageable, actionable steps, reducing overwhelm and creating a clear path forward.

  3. Self-Care: Our ability to overcome setbacks is intimately linked to our physical and emotional well-being. Prioritizing self-care ensures we have the energy and health to tackle professional challenges.

  4. Celebrate Small Wins: Recognizing and celebrating progress, no matter how small, can bolster our spirits and motivation. It reinforces the value of our efforts and keeps us focused on the positive aspects of our journey.

Every professional journey is punctuated with challenges and obstacles that test our resilience and determination. How we respond to those hurdles can define our path to success and personal fulfillment. Setbacks come in a various forms from missed targets, project failures or personal missteps. They are bumps and potholes on a professional road. Challenging our direction and resolve. However, it's essential to recognize that setbacks are not the end. But rather signposts for growth and learning. They prompt us to pause evaluate and recalibrate our strategies. Ensuring we are aligned with our goals and values. I can't tell you how many times I have sat there with this, with this exact. sentence. Noticing that the setback that I hit is a signpost for growth and learning. And they actually prompt me to pause and evaluate and recalibrate my strategies. You're listening to Kathie's coaching podcast I'm your host Kathie Owen. One essential factor for this is a growth mindset. And you know, you hear me talking about growth mindset on this channel all the time. So what is a growth mindset? It is a belief in the fluidity of our capabilities and the power of effort over inherent talent. It's helpful to have a growth mindset because you view challenges as opportunities to expand your skills and knowledge. And it encourages us to persist through difficulties. Understanding that every effort. Brings us closer to mastery. So we're going to talk about strategies for dealing with setback, but I want you to remember this one little thing. How viewing setbacks as opportunities. And understanding this is not happening to you, but it's happening for you. That little shift in mindset can change that whole setback and it will help you persist through the difficulties and understand that every effort brings you closer to mastery. So now let's get to the good stuff. Strategies for learning from setbacks. Number one emotional management. The initial step in dealing with setbacks is managing our emotional response, recognizing and addressing our feelings helps prevent rash decisions and ensures we approach the situation with clarity and purpose. So this means managing your emotions. Just remember this one little thing that had me shift in my emotional management. Is that emotions are just energy in motion. And when you realize that you slow down a little bit and you manage the emotions, you feel them, you recognize and address your feelings. And another thing that is a strategy for learning from setbacks is you seek and accept support. None of us are an island. Especially in the corporate world and building a network of peers, mentors and advisors can provide the external perspective and encouragement needed to overcome challenges. And then we have flexibility and adaptability and this means that you have the ability to pivot and adapt to new circumstances. And that is in valuable when faced with setbacks. Being open to changing the course and trying new strategies can lead to unexpected and rewarding pathways. And then we have perseverance and persistence. The journey to success is rarely a straight line. And maintaining the drive to keep pushing forward. Despite setbacks is crucial. It's about focusing on the process, not just the outcome. And finding fulfillment in the effort itself. So this reminds me of this statement, the journey and the destination are one. And when you enjoy the journey, just as much as the destination. You will find perseverance and persistence. And the journey to success is rarely a straight line. So you're going to hit ups downs. Corners curves. Setbacks. Roadblocks. That's exactly what we're talking about today. So you want to have perseverance and persistence. And of course, you know, I'm going to say this, one of the strategies. For learning from setbacks is learning and growth. Every setback carries with it. A lesson. Taking the time to reflect on what went wrong, why it happened and how it can it be avoided in the future is a fundamental to personal and professional development. So that is just a simple strategy for learning from setbacks. What are they again? Let's go over them. You have emotional management, you have seeking and accepting support. You have flexibility and adaptability, perseverance, and persistence and learning and growth. So how does one maintain motivation when they are having a setback? Great question. Motivation. One of my favorite topics. First of all, it requires a clear vision of your, why? The driving force behind your goals revisiting your core motivations can reignite your passion and commitment, providing the energy to persevere through our challenges. So I liked the book start with why by Simon Sineck because when you discover your why and your vision and your purpose, you will begin to notice, like, my mentor always teaches us. That everything is contributing to your vision. Everything that happens to you is contributing to your vision and helping you understand your why. And then. To maintain motivation. We need practical steps for overcoming setbacks because it's not, if it's. When you're going to hit a setback. So it helps to take a break. Sometimes stepping back is the most productive action. It allows for mental and emotional recovery, enabling us to return to our challenges with renewed vigor and perspective. You may or may not have noticed, but recently I had to take a break from my content creation because I hit a setback that set. That was technical difficulties problems with my video processing problems, with my new computer, just learning it and understanding it. And so I took a break. I took a break and I took care of myself and I said, do you know what. This can wait. It's not that urgent. And so I took a step back and. Took a break. And actually all of these steps will help you see how I overcame this setback. Even reassessing and planning, use the insight gained from setbacks to reassess goals and strategies. Break down over arching objectives, into manageable, actionable steps, reducing overwhelm, and creating a clear path forward. So how did I reassess and plan from my setback? I just, I took some time off and I started planning out my strategies of what I was going to do once I got back on track. I started creating these mind maps. I created many, many mind maps, which I can. Easily teach off of which is something simple to understand and help you understand. And that was how I reassessed and plan during my setback. And self-care is another practical step for overcoming setbacks. Our ability to overcome setbacks is intimately linked to our physical and emotional wellbeing. Prioritizing self care ensures that we have the energy and health to tackle professional challenges. So one simple thing that happened to me during this same exact time is I suffered a minor injury in my elbow and this. Affected my workouts. It affected my self care that because fitness to me is my self-care. And how I get into the zone. I start that in the morning. Just because I couldn't use my elbow. And so I use things like. I just did cardio. I would just go to the gym and do red light. Sometimes I would just go to the gym and do massage, or I would just relax and take care of myself. I let my elbow rest and recover. And now it's better. And I also learned something from this setback. I learned that. Sometimes my workouts don't need to be as intense as they used to be. That was self-care. And then finally we have. The practical step for overcoming setbacks, and that is celebrate small wins, recognize and celebrate progress, no matter how small, because this can bolster our spirits and motivation. It reinforces the value of our efforts. And keeps us focused on the positive aspects of our journey. So I invite you to celebrate small wins and go, okay. Just like with my workout thing, I celebrated the fact that, wow, I don't really have to spend that whole hour in the gym to get the results that I'm looking for, but maybe just 45 minutes, sometimes just 30 minutes. And I took it easier on myself by doing that. So the practical steps for overcoming setbacks is take a break. Reassess and plan self-care and celebrating small wins. So today I invite you to embrace resilience and learn from the setbacks. Today. We discuss the nature of setbacks strategies from learning from setbacks and how to maintain motivation during a setback. If you'd like a copy of this mind map, the link is in the show notes and description below. And until next time I will see you next time. Peace out and Namaste
