How To Overcome Resistance

We've all been there. We set a goal with the greatest intentions and we are filled with optimism. Very quickly though, fear, doubt, and indecision creep in. This is resistance in disguise!

There is nothing easy about resistance. I call it speed bumps or hiccups on the way to our destination. It is not a matter of "if" you will hit resistance but "when."

Resistance is that thing that keeps you from doing what you say you're going to do!

Stop mind screwing yourself out of success when you hit these speed bumps and be ready with these 3 mindset shifts!

1. Expect Resistance to Happen.

Resistance can take many forms: friend drama, the weather, family obligations, illness, government. The list goes on and on.

  • It will look different for every person
  • It will look like something else, like that bright shiny object that will take you off the path!

In his book "War of Art" Steven Pressfield says

"Resistance is the equal and opposite reaction of natrue to the new thing that you and I are called to bring forth out of nothing. There would be no resistance without the dream."

 

The bigger the goal, the bigger the resistance. 

It's all part of the "fun" but not fun like a party fun. It's fun like your trainer telling you that it's time for some fun. Like and uphill sprint fun.

This kind of fun makes you stronger and more confident. It is in no way EASY.

2. Change the conversation. Or as I like to say your self-talk.

Stop saying things like "I can't focus." "I procrastinate." or "I never follow through." Even if they are true. They are only surface-level statements.

What do I mean by that? You are simply not calling it what it is. Instead, it's resistance to what is. Replace that "I think I can't _______" with - Resistance!

  • So if you think you can't focus. Resistance.
  • If you think you procrastinate. Resistance.
  • If you think you never follow through. Resistance.

3. Ask good questions.

Resistance is a brilliant teacher. Ask the right questions and you will hear the right answers.

  • What am I avoiding?
  • What makes me uncomfortable about this?
  • Am I willing to endure this discomfort to achieve my goal?

Most of the time, once you what you are resisting and why, you will face it in the name of your goal. If not, perhaps you can reframe your goal.

  • Be ready for resistance.
  • Accept that it is supposed to be there.
  • Name it when it shows up.
  • Let it be your teacher.
  • Ask really good questions.
  • Listen and be open no matter how uncomfortable you might be.
  • Decide to stretch beyond your discomfort and/or fear in the name of achieving your dream.
